Seeing

I think it must have been February of last year or something.

We were in Haifa, on Mount Carmel. My grandparents took my parents and my cousins and me to see the sunset.

We passed behind backyards through a narrow path. Behind one abandoned building that had once been beautiful but had been taken by weeds and moss, tarnishing the characteristic Israeli white-painted walls. Through streets, to an empty lot. You could see the valley, and where the gravel ended there was a steep grassy drop.

All the while my younger cousins chattered about anything and everything. The sunset was beautiful over the city and the sea.

My middle cousin, aged seven, peered up at the sky. "I see God," he said. "Shira, I see God."

And though I fancy myself as one who doesn't, can't, or won't believe, he said it so innocently. So sweetly. I know him to be a trickster, but who am I to say what he did or didn't see?

Who knows, maybe there was something more in that sunset. I'm not one to tell.

Gimme the salt

My cousins are here. The youngest one (age 3 as of this past Friday) and I were eating cucumber slices. I noticed he was putting way too much salt on his, so I moved it far away from him.

Him: Give me the salt.
Me: No.
Him: Give me the salt.
Me: No.
Him: Give me the salt.
Me: No.
Him: I'll punch you in the face.

At which point I burst out laughing.

I have an interesting family.

Saturday

Today is Saturday! Oh yeah!

Saturdays are special because they are my one day off. It's like a treat. I don't mind my one-day weekends so much anymore, since what the heck, at least I have a day! And the school schedule here makes some sense, so that's nice. And I do enjoy going to school, I just despise homework.

This morning my family and I went to Independence Park, which is a park overlooking the sea. From there we went down the path to the marina and had a look at the yachts. We walked across the beaches, which today were absolutely chock-full of people playing volleyball and sunbathing and surfing and sailing. Everyone loves a warm Saturday.

After that, we walked back up the street to my cousins', where we ate lunch. My aunt was watching Sherlock, which I've wanted to watch ever since I heard that Steven Moffatt, the head writer of Doctor Who, is one of the creators. So I watched an episode and a half of season one with her, which I found exceedingly interesting. I would definitely recommend it.

A short time later we went home. I'm currently supposed to be studying for my Israeli heritage test or doing some science homework, but (1) I gave myself a challenge, (2) I am a procrastinator, and (3) I detest homework.

Right, off to procrastinate some more. Maybe I'll write two blog posts today!
